Prison employee fingered in 'Shawshank' escape plot

Mashable - Thu, 06/11/2015 - 12:35

DANNEMORA, N.Y. — Investigators believe a prison employee had agreed to be the getaway driver in last weekend's escape by two convicted killers, but she didn't show up, a person close to the investigation told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The person said that was one reason the manhunt was focused on the woods only a few miles from the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility. The person was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

After a magically historic day at the @belmontstakes, never imagined I'd spend Sunday outside prison walls, just south of the Canadian border.

16 on-point responses from female scientists to Nobel winner's sexist comments

Mashable - Thu, 06/11/2015 - 12:03

LONDON — How do you respond to sexist comments if you're a female scientist who has been told that you should be in a single-sex lab because male scientists might fall in love with you? You mock them on Twitter, of course.

Female scientists have been tweeting photos of themselves (and some historical figures) with the hashtag #distractinglysexy in response to Sir Tim Hunt's comments on Tuesday. He told a conference in South Korea that the "trouble with girls" is they fall in love with you, you fall in love with them and that then when they're criticised, they cry

The robots are coming. To save us.

Mashable - Thu, 06/11/2015 - 11:58

It may be time to stop worrying about the robot uprising and begin thinking how we can prepare robot rescue teams for the next earthquake, tsunami or nuclear disaster.

Last week, 24 robots — programmed and built by teams from around the world — gathered in Pomona, California, to accept a challenge from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The quest: Could each of these semi-autonomous robots complete eight tasks in a simulated disaster environment (a nuclear accident) in under an hour?

See also: Hands on with Pepper, the affectionate robot

Teams have been getting ready for the DARPA Robotics Challenge for years, competing in trials, retrofitting robots and building their own simulated tasks to try and prepare for a competition where many of the tasks were only loosely sketched out. Those tasks — climbing stairs, traversing rubble, turning on power, drilling holes in the wall, opening doors and walking through them, and driving cars (and getting out of those cars on their own) — are simple for humans, but challenging for automatons. Mashable - Thu, 06/11/2015 - 11:30

Demand for new airplanes around the world will continue to soar, as millions of people in developing nations take to the skies for the first time.

In order to fill that demand, Boeing, its rival Airbus and smaller manufacturers such as Embraer and Bombardier will have to build more than five new planes a day, every day for the next two decades.

These planes will help double the number of aircraft worldwide from 21,600 to 43,560 in 2034. Fifty-eight percent of the 38,050 airplanes delivered over that time will be used to accommodate growth. The rest will replace existing aircraftNearly two out of every five new planes will head to Asia. Read more...

Mashable - Thu, 06/11/2015 - 11:12

You're not a size 6, you're a Lily

Manifesta, an athletic apparel company designed for all shapes, has replaced sizes on its website with flowers in order to encourage the idea that women are more than a number
